Care of New born
Birth of New Born Baby
Ayurveda advises that a new born child should be given a bath with
warm water, once proper cleansing of all the orifices is done.
Also, a combination of clarified butter (Ghee) and honey in unequal
amounts should be given to the new born. This is believed to help in the
elimination of the meconium (the waste products accumulated in large intestine
of the fetus during its intra uterine life - i.e. while it was in the mother's
womb).
Mother's milk is the best nutrition for the new born. The amount
and the number of feeds per day differ for all babies; hence feeds should
be based on the needs of the baby. Ideally, the baby should be breast-fed
till he or she is 8-9 months old; however, semi solid and solid food should
be started from third month and seventh month onwards, respectively.
The clothes of the infant should be made of very soft material, such
as used cotton or silk, which has a soothing and comforting effect on the
soft and delicate skin of the new born.
Also, the bed cover and bed sheet of the infant should be made of
silk cloth; these should be washed every day and should be dried in sunlight,
which acts as natural germicide.
Ecological cleanliness around the mother and child should be maintained.
The child should be named at the earliest to impart to him/ her,
a sense of individuality.
Some controversial issues
The role of oils in Ayurvedic treatment is to subdue the vitiated
Vata Dosha. For this reason, it is advised in the Ayurvedic texts, to put
drops of oil in the ears, especially in those of the new born. However,
this should not be done when the ears are wet, or during the rainy season,
when the weather is humid, or when there is any discharge or infection in
the ears, as this might precipitate a fungal infection and aggravate the
infection.
Ayurveda also advises a massage of the newborn with various medicated
oils. This strengthens the muscles and makes the skin lustrous by subduing
the vitiated Vata Dosha. However, the massage should be done preferably
by the mother, or any other family member so as to maintain hygienity and
to avoid infections.
Ayurveda believes that application of oil on the scalp improves the
texture of hair and also promotes hair growth. It also exerts a cooling
effect on the body. But it should be avoided in the infants in whom the
scalp skin is exfoliated.
